About Children of Incarcerated Caregivers
Children of Incarcerated Caregivers (CIC) was founded in response to the increasing number of children affected by mass incarceration. Our mission is to promote the best interests of children when their parents become incarcerated or otherwise involved in the criminal legal system.
There is a growing need to focus on the wellbeing of children impacted by parental incarceration. Between 1980 and 2019, the number of incarcerated women in America grew by more than 700%. In 2024, women are still the fastest-growing group of incarcerated persons. Most of these women are mothers.
We advocate for children on a local and international level. Through our CIC Connects program, we bring resources and opportunities to Minnesota youth affected by parental incarceration. Through our legal advocacy work, we advocate for family-focused sentencing practices and alternatives to parental incarceration that keep families intact. Through our Prison Nursery Project, we have established a global network to advocate for the best interests of children who face living in prison with an incarcerated parent.
